Season 2 of “Squid Game” gets the green light, Chinese netizens are racing
June 12, netflix officially lit green the second season of squid game, much to the delight of fans around the world. China is no exception.

Since squid game premiered in September 2021, the show has enjoyed huge popularity among Chinese netizens although Netflix is not officially available in the country. Avid fans even nominated their favorite childhood games for a Chinese version of Squid Game.
Several small kiosks specializing in dalgona (a Korean honeycomb toffee) candy inspired by one of the show’s death challenges have also popped up in major Chinese cities like Shanghai, capitalizing on squid game‘s fandom in the country.
Delighted with the news, fans of the show took to microblogging platform Weibo to express their excitement for season two, and a related hashtag gained over 130 million views in less than 24 hours.
Although the second season won’t be released until late 2023 or early 2024, fans have been eagerly urging the production team to jump in. One such comment reads, “Please film it quickly; I want to see him soon!”
So far, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of squid gamehas only disclosed limited information about the second season. Protagonists Seong Gi-hun and Front Man will continue to be played by Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun. However, the new season will likely come with a whole new cast of characters.
Some Chinese fans have expressed curiosity about squid game cast and storyline for season two.
“So Young-hee’s boyfriend Cheol-su is going to replace her as the animatronic doll?” » demand a viewer, adding, “I’m looking forward to the new season two games!”
squid game has undoubtedly left its mark on millions of fans around the world by evoking themes of alienation, inequality and the violent nature of capitalism. It remains to be seen how the show’s second season will address these themes, of course, but fans in China will be watching to find out.
