To address the ongoing dangers of wildfires in California, CHSWC’s SASH program has produced this fact sheet to educate school and school district employees on Cal / OSHA Wildfire Smoke Protection Standard. The fact sheet contains a summary of the standard and information on the health effects of smoke from forest fires, the protective measures required by Cal / OSHA, and relevant website references. The Forest Fire Smoke Protection publication was developed for the CHSWC by the UCLA Occupational Safety and Health Program (LOSH) and is available for download or print on the CHSWC website.

The California School Action for Safety and Health program is administered by the CHSWC of the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) under an interagency agreement with the Labor Occupational Health Program at the University of California at Berkeley. SASH was created to help schools across the state continually improve their injury and illness prevention practices. The program includes training and resources to enable schools or school districts to develop or improve injury and illness prevention (IIPP) programs and make other health and safety improvements. that help protect school or school district employees from work-related injuries and illnesses. The target audience focuses on kindergarten to grade 12 schools and school districts at high risk of workplace injury and illness.

The CHSWC is responsible for reviewing the health and safety and workers’ compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative changes to improve their operation.
