A Day in the Life with Director of Organizational Development, Kelly Dougherty

Welcome to the “A Day in the Life” blog series. Here we will feature interviews with Swimlaners to learn more about their experience. This series will give you insight into Swimlane, our culture and the people who drive us forward.

Hi, I’m Kelly Dougherty! I’m originally from Colorado – grew up in Colorado Springs, attended college at CSU in Fort Collins, and have now lived in Louisville for 14 years. I am happily married to my husband, James, a videographer for the ABC Channel 7 affiliate for 13 years. We have a 12 year old rescue dog, Oscar.

How long have you been with Swimlane?

I will be with Swimlane for 5 years on June 6th!

What is your job exactly ?

I like to say that I fill in the holes in the boat until I can find a permanent solution. I’ve done a lot of “jobs” at Swimlane, whatever is needed right now – Project Manager, IT, Scrum Master, Event Planner, HR. These days, I focus more on “people operations,” prioritizing our people by humanizing impersonal systems and continually improving engagement, development, and retention.

What do you enjoy most about working at Swimlane?

We have built a culture where people enjoy and take ownership of their work. Everyone truly goes above and beyond to achieve the best results and is ready to help each other achieve great results overall.

What excites you most about your job?

I love making an impact and helping people succeed. Anytime I can find a way to make something better or more efficient, that’s a win for me. I love that Swimlane not only allows for this kind of experimentation, but strives for it!

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I’ve become one of those Peloton freaks during the pandemic (app user) and I’m a bit obsessed with their Bike Bootcamps. We also have an old speedboat, so in the summer I do a lot of boating and camping, mostly in Wyoming. I like to travel, try new restaurants and breweries, and take time to recharge my batteries (introverted!)

Your personal motto or mantra:

The only constant is change

Three words that best describe you:

Loyal, strategic, affable

What is Swimlane’s core value that speaks to you the most?

Honestly, I can’t choose just one. I helped create our core values and they all really resonate with me – it’s part of what I love about Swimlane. Our values are not ambitious, they are really at the heart of who we are as a company.
